Suspect Accused of Hitting Woman With Pestle During Argument Over HIV Infection
Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified only as Chinyere.
According to the police, Emmanuel was arrested at his residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, on September 21, 2026, following information that he had allegedly killed the woman.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect allegedly killed Chinyere on September 19, wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.
The police said the decomposing body was discovered after its odour attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended Emmanuel before police operatives arrived.
The victim’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to identify and locate her relatives.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the killing, saying it followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with HIV.
He reportedly told investigators that he struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death.
The police said Emmanuel was rescued from an angry mob and subsequently re-arrested by officers attached to the Awkunanaw Division.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the incident and ensure the suspect is arraigned after the investigation.
The command also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends of their movements and exercise caution when visiting or spending time with people.
