…NUT directs public primary and secondary school teachers to stay away from classrooms until victims regain freedom

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued abduction of some teachers and pupils.

The directive, issued by the union’s leadership, follows growing concerns over the safety of the kidnapped victims, whose rescue and release remain uncertain.

According to the union, the prolonged captivity of the affected teachers and pupils has created widespread fear among educators, increased anxiety within communities, and discouraged many parents from sending their children to school.

The NUT said the industrial action is intended to draw the attention of relevant authorities to the urgent need for stronger and more coordinated efforts to secure the safe release of the abductees.

The union urged all affected teachers to comply fully with the directive, remain peaceful, and stay safe in their homes while the strike lasts.

It also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, assuring them that the union would continue to engage government authorities and other stakeholders through lawful means until the victims are freed.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and security of teachers and learners, the union stressed that the safety of those within the education sector remains a top priority.

The directive was signed by the Chairman of the NUT, Oyo State Wing, Hassan A. Fatai.
