The union directed lecturers to suspend all academic activities after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University chapter (ASUU-PLASU), has declared a total and indefinite strike over the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily address its outstanding demands.
The decision was reached by the union’s Congress at a meeting on August 25, 2026, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.
In a statement signed by the ASUU-PLASU Chairperson, Vincent Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Iliya, the union said the management’s response to its demands, contained in a letter dated August 18, failed to adequately address the issues raised.
Among the union’s demands are the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and payment of outstanding arrears from January 2026.
The union is also demanding the provision of safe staff quarters, construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and an end to alleged intimidation of union leaders. It further demanded payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25 and 35 per cent wage award.
With the issues unresolved, Congress, with the approval of the National Executive Council of ASUU, resolved to commence indefinite industrial action.
The union consequently directed all its members to suspend academic activities at the institution until further notice, while appealing for the understanding and cooperation of members and other stakeholders.
