Oyo Government says it has fulfilled all requirements for the erosion and flood control project, appeals for residents’ patience.
Residents of flood-prone communities captured under the Nigeria Climate Adaptation-Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB) have expressed growing frustration over the delay in the commencement of the intervention project, warning that recurring flash floods continue to threaten lives, homes and livelihoods.
The concerns were raised during an inspection tour of the proposed project sites by the Oyo State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), led by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto.
During the visit, residents lamented that despite receiving several inspection teams over the years, physical construction has yet to commence. They noted that recent flash floods have worsened their plight, with severe erosion and overflowing streams threatening homes, roads, businesses and farmlands.
The affected communities appealed to the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of the NEWMAP-EIB intervention, describing it as a critical project needed to safeguard lives, restore damaged infrastructure and prevent further environmental disasters.
Responding to the concerns, Aderinto acknowledged the frustrations of the residents, describing them as understandable in view of the devastating effects of flooding experienced in recent years.
He assured the communities that the Oyo State Government has fulfilled all conditions required for the commencement of the project, including providing counterpart support and completing the necessary technical, environmental and social safeguard requirements.
“The Oyo State Government has completed its obligations under the project framework and remains committed to ensuring that implementation begins. We will formally relay your messages and the urgency of your situation to the Federal Government and all relevant stakeholders for necessary action,” he said.
The commissioner reaffirmed Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s commitment to ensuring the project’s implementation and pledged continued engagement with relevant Federal Government authorities and development partners to facilitate its commencement.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and continue supporting government efforts, assuring them that their cooperation would be vital to the smooth execution of the project once construction begins.
Aderinto further noted that the NEWMAP-EIB project is designed to address erosion challenges, improve stormwater management, reduce flooding and strengthen climate resilience in vulnerable communities across Oyo State.
