The panel will investigate the August 24 incident, examine the role of security operatives and recommend prosecution, compensation or disciplinary action where necessary.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has established a Coroner Inquest/Panel of Inquiry to investigate the killings, shootings and violence reported at Naira and Kobo Junction, Motor Park/Garage Area, Ikire, on August 24, 2026.
The executive order takes effect on August 31, with Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola appointed as chairman and Abiodun Badiora as secretary.
Other members include retired AIG Aderanti Kayode, Nigerian Bar Association representative Dele Akintayo, civil society representative Wale Balogun, an Ikire community representative and medical/forensic expert Babatunde Afolabi.
The panel will determine the circumstances and causes of the violence, establish the number and identities of victims, and investigate the roles of security personnel and other individuals or groups involved.
It will also determine whether live ammunition or other weapons were used and whether their use complied with the law, rules of engagement and human rights standards.
The panel has powers to summon witnesses, obtain police and medical records, inspect relevant locations and receive documentary and oral evidence. It may recommend prosecution, disciplinary action, compensation and institutional reforms.
Governor Adeleke also ordered the preservation of firearms and ammunition records, police logs, medical and autopsy reports, photographs, videos and other evidence relevant to the investigation.
The panel is expected to begin sitting within seven days of its inauguration and submit its report within 30 days of its first sitting, subject to any extension approved by the governor.
Victims’ families, eyewitnesses, journalists, transport workers, security personnel, community leaders and other stakeholders have been invited to submit evidence and memoranda to the panel.
