The union reached an agreement with the Bayelsa Government on payment of allowances and arrears from October 2026 and January 2027.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Niger Delta University (NDU) branch, has suspended its indefinite strike following a Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Bayelsa State Government.
The branch chairperson, Lucky Bebeteidoh, announced the suspension on Saturday in Yenagoa, saying the industrial action was triggered by delays in implementing the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Professional Allowance.
Under the agreement, the state government will begin paying CATA and Professional Allowance from October 2026.
The government also agreed to commence payment of nine months’ arrears of CATA and Professional Allowance, as well as 19 months’ wage award arrears, from January 2027.
Bebeteidoh said no ASUU member would be victimised for participating in the strike, while the agreement allows the union to take action under labour laws if the government substantially breaches its terms.
The ASUU-NDU chairman, however, appealed to Governor Douye Diri to review the university’s funding arrangement, warning that the current subvention policy was gradually weakening the institution.
He also called for the construction of staff housing, noting that many lecturers travel daily between Yenagoa and Amassoma, affecting their productivity.
Bebeteidoh thanked the governor for his support and urged the state government to address the university’s funding and accommodation challenges.
