Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo

Government urges Nigerians to reflect on democracy, national unity and responsible citizenship as Democracy Day is observed nationwide

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, the rule of law and national unity.

The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, on Thursday.

According to the minister, June 12 remains a significant symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle and a tribute to the courage and sacrifices of citizens who fought for democratic rule.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey, embrace responsible citizenship and remain committed to peace, unity and lawful conduct.

He also assured citizens that the government would continue to strengthen internal security through collaboration with relevant agencies to safeguard lives and property.

June 12 is observed annually in honour of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll, won by late Chief MKO Abiola but later annulled by the military government.

The date was officially adopted as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in 2018, replacing May 29, in recognition of Abiola’s legacy and the sacrifices made in the struggle for democratic governance.
