The 39-year-old Argentina captain says he has decided to end his international career after a decorated spell with the national team.
Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football after leading Argentina to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The 39-year-old forward made the announcement on Monday, saying the decision was painful but that he believed it was the right time to step away.
“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul but I understand that it is the right time,” Messi said in a statement posted on Instagram.
Messi captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup, defeating France on penalties in the final in Qatar. However, his team lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 final.
The announcement follows the death of Messi’s father, Jorge, in August. The football star had previously expressed doubts about continuing his playing career for much longer.
Messi also thanked his country and supporters, insisting that he had always given his best for the Argentina national team.
Despite retiring from international football, Messi is expected to continue his club career with Inter Miami, where his current contract runs until the end of the 2028 MLS season.
