State government designates AKK pipeline corridor as industrial zone as partnership targets jobs, investment and gas-powered economic expansion.

The Niger State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to develop a Gas Master Plan aimed at unlocking industrial growth through the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline.

The agreement was signed during the AKK and Energy Business Development Forum at the Government House in Minna between the state government and NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML).

Governor Umaru Bago described the partnership as a landmark initiative that would transform Niger State into a major industrial hub and strengthen economic development across Nigeria.

He said the project would attract agro-allied industries, fertiliser manufacturers and hydrocarbon-based businesses while complementing the state’s hydro and solar energy resources.

Bago disclosed that the state government had designated the entire AKK pipeline corridor within Niger State as an industrial development zone, adding that the area would be gazetted to create a structured environment for investors.

The governor also expressed optimism that the project would unlock the economic potential of the Bida Basin, generate employment and expand the state’s productive capacity.

Representing the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Ojulari, the Executive Vice President, Gas, Power and New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maximising the economic benefits of the AKK pipeline.

He revealed that NNPC plans to extend gas distribution infrastructure to Suleja, Lambata and Minna, describing the Gas Master Plan as a practical roadmap for sustainable gas commercialisation in the state.

Managing Director of NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), Audu Ibrahim, said construction of the AKK pipeline was progressing steadily and expressed confidence that the project would significantly improve gas supply to industries and businesses upon completion.

Also speaking, NGML Executive Director of Gas Distribution, Auwal Ibrahim, said Niger State is strategically positioned to become a leading centre for gas-based industrial development, with plans to expand gas distribution to industries, businesses and households.

The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, commended the initiative and pledged the support of traditional institutions to ensure its successful implementation.

Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, described the forum as a strategic platform for deepening partnerships that would enable Niger State to fully harness the opportunities presented by the AKK gas pipeline.
