nationwide strike action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers

Labour union warns of possible solidarity action as insecurity continues to threaten schools and workers across Nigeria.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind the nationwide strike action embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), demanding the immediate release of pupils, students and teachers abducted by kidnappers across the country.

In a statement signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the labour centre described the strike as a justified response to the growing insecurity confronting teachers and schoolchildren, noting that educators can no longer remain vulnerable to attacks while carrying out their duties. The Congress said the action reflects the determination of teachers to protect themselves amid increasing cases of abductions and violence targeting educational institutions.

Expressing concern over the plight of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, the NLC said it was deeply disturbed by reports and images emerging from the incident. The union stressed that insecurity has become a national crisis affecting workers, students and communities across the country, from the North to the South. It warned that it could organize solidarity actions with teachers and other workers if governments fail to demonstrate greater commitment to tackling insecurity.

While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, the Congress urged authorities at all levels to move beyond routine assurances and take concrete measures to secure lives and property. The NLC concluded by demanding the immediate rescue and release of all abducted victims and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools and communities nationwide.
