… says families of kidnapped victims remain in government’s thoughts amid Children’s Day observance
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has expressed solidarity with families of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to secure their safe return.

The governor gave the assurance in a message commemorating the dual celebration of Eid-el-Kabir and National Children’s Day.
The abduction occurred on May 15 when armed terrorists reportedly attacked three schools in Oriire LGA and whisked away dozens of pupils, including toddlers, alongside several teachers.
The attack left the community devastated after a teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, was killed during the invasion, while another teacher, identified as Michael Oyedokun, was later reportedly beheaded in captivity, sparking widespread outrage and renewed calls for urgent government action.
In a message posted on his official X account on Wednesday morning, Makinde said the state government shares in the pain of the affected families during what should have been a period of celebration and togetherness.
“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones, and with security agencies working to keep our communities safe,” the governor stated.
He further reassured residents that the government remains committed to resolving the crisis.
“We are working to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped in Oriire LGA. May this holy season fill our State with peace,” he added.
Reports also indicate that the abductors have reportedly opened communication channels with the Oyo State Government, although it remains unclear whether the discussions are being handled directly by the governor or through designated representatives.
Children’s Day is celebrated annually in Nigeria on May 27 to honour children and promote their protection, education, and overall well-being.
