Closure Takes Effect September 7 as Government Moves to Curb Spread
The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state over a suspected diphtheria outbreak.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang issued the directive after suspected cases were reported in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
The closure takes effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, and applies to schools that have already resumed academic activities.
The government said the measure is aimed at protecting pupils, students, teachers and other school staff while efforts to contain the suspected outbreak continue.
School proprietors, administrators and teachers have been directed to comply, while parents and guardians have been advised to keep their children and wards at home throughout the closure.
The government appealed for stakeholders’ cooperation, saying further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated in due course.
