President pledges investment in advanced military technology, local defence production and troop capacity at Army Day celebration.

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deploying emerging technologies to combat insecurity, pledging to modernise the Armed Forces through advanced military equipment, improved training and intelligence-driven operations.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration and the African Land Forces Forum in Port Harcourt, President Tinubu said his government is investing in artificial intelligence, research, innovation and other modern technologies to strengthen operational planning and combat readiness.

The President also highlighted plans to revitalise the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), saying the move would boost local production of military hardware, create skilled jobs and reduce reliance on foreign defence equipment.

President Tinubu praised the Nigerian Army for its sacrifices in protecting Nigeria and contributing to regional peace, assuring that the families of fallen soldiers would not be forgotten. He also commended the African Land Forces Forum for promoting defence cooperation and knowledge sharing across the continent.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara described the event as a sign of peace and stability in the state, while calling for improved welfare for military personnel.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity, thanking President Tinubu for his continued support and pledging the loyalty of officers and soldiers to the administration.

The ceremony featured military displays, demonstrations and the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards, with former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, senior government officials and top military officers in attendance.
