President says interfaith dialogue remains key to tackling insecurity as Vatican envoy marks 50 years of Nigeria–Holy See relations.
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting religious harmony, peace and tolerance, describing interfaith dialogue as the most effective path to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
President Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday while receiving the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, at his Abuja residence. He praised the Catholic Church’s contributions to education, healthcare and humanitarian services, recalling that he returned mission schools to religious institutions during his tenure as Lagos State governor.

The President also commended Pope Leo XIV’s global peace efforts, saying he was honoured to attend the Pope’s inauguration and expressing hope of welcoming him to Nigeria in the future. President Tinubu assured the Vatican envoy that his administration would continue investing in security, youth development and freedom of worship to promote national unity.

In his remarks, Archbishop Gallagher thanked President Tinubu for attending Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration and said he was in Nigeria to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See. He described Nigeria as the “heart of Africa,” praised the country’s vibrant Catholic community, and commended the President’s efforts to promote peace and strengthen ties with the Church.
