US president says American military action weakened extremist leaders and curbed attacks on Christian communities.

United States President Donald Trump has claimed that American military operations have largely ended the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking during an event in Washington on Friday, Trump said the US “recently struck Nigeria” and significantly weakened those responsible for attacks on Christian communities affected by insurgency and extremist violence.

He alleged that before the intervention, thousands of women, children and elderly people had been killed, adding that the US military eliminated key leaders of the groups behind the attacks.

Trump further claimed the operation had deterred further violence, saying those responsible were now unwilling to continue the attacks for fear of a stronger American response.
