Opposition party says Federal Government lacks the trust and moral authority to restructure Nigeria’s policing system.

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has opposed the Federal Government’s proposed establishment of state police, expressing concerns over the credibility of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to implement such a far-reaching security reform.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the party argued that while Nigeria urgently needs comprehensive reforms of its security and law enforcement institutions, the current administration lacks the public trust and moral standing required to oversee the creation of state police.

The PRP acknowledged the need to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture but maintained that the APC-led government had failed to effectively manage existing security structures and institutions.

According to the party, the proposal to establish state police should be approached with caution, describing the move as suspicious and urging Nigerians to reject it.

The opposition party further stated that future elections should serve as a measure of public confidence and credibility before major constitutional changes, such as the introduction of state police, are implemented.

The reaction comes after President Bola Tinubu transmitted a constitutional amendment bill to the Senate seeking the establishment of state police services across the federation. The Senate subsequently passed the bill, paving the way for further legislative consideration.

The PRP also called on the Federal Government to focus on tackling insecurity and protecting lives and property across the country while addressing concerns surrounding the proposed policing reform.
