The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing stiffer penalties for traffic offences and certain activities carried out in commercial vehicles.
Under the amended legislation, motorists convicted of disobeying traffic lights, road signs, pavements, or road markings will face a fine of ₦100,000.
The bill also prescribes a ₦50,000 penalty for individuals found hawking, trading, or preaching inside commercial buses.
Lawmakers said the amendment is designed to promote road discipline, reduce distractions in public transportation, and improve safety on highways across the country.
The Senate noted that the revised provisions would strengthen the enforcement powers of the FRSC and encourage greater compliance with traffic regulations.
The bill is expected to be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence before being forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
