Mission urges travellers to comply with authorised stay periods amid increased scrutiny of visa overstays.
The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers that the expiration date on a U.S. visa does not determine how long they are permitted to remain in the country, warning against visa overstays.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday as part of its #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, the Mission explained that the duration of stay is determined solely by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the point of entry.

“The length of time an international visitor is allowed to stay in the United States is determined by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer upon your arrival, NOT your visa expiration date,” the Mission stated.
It clarified that a U.S. visa only grants permission to travel to a U.S. port of entry and request admission, and does not guarantee automatic entry or a fixed duration of stay.
“The CBP officer determines your ‘Admit Until Date’ upon your arrival, and you can check the date you must depart online,” the Mission added.
The advisory comes amid increased attention by Washington on visa overstays by foreign nationals, including Nigerians. Recent immigration data and policy developments indicate that the U.S. government is closely monitoring countries with higher rates of visa non-compliance.
Available data show that Nigeria records a 5.56 per cent overstay rate for B1/B2 visitor visas, while student and exchange visa holders account for an 11.90 per cent overstay rate.
In response, the U.S. Mission has intensified its #VisaWiseTravelSmart awareness campaign to educate visa applicants on travel regulations, interview preparation and compliance with immigration requirements after arrival.
The Mission warned that visa violations by individuals could have wider implications for other Nigerian applicants, including stricter visa processing conditions, longer waiting periods and additional documentation requirements.
It urged Nigerians travelling to the United States for education, business or tourism to check their entry records immediately after arrival and ensure they depart before their authorised stay expires to maintain a clean travel history.
