Renowned theatre icon and star of The Gods Are Not to Blame leaves behind a lasting legacy in Nigerian film and stage performance.
The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and theatre legend, Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.
His death was confirmed on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod in a heartfelt post shared on Instagram.

Announcing the sad news, Afod wrote: “Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, one of the pioneering theatre troupes that helped shape the Yoruba entertainment industry.
Over the decades, he became one of the most respected figures in Nigerian theatre and film, earning widespread acclaim for his exceptional stagecraft and memorable screen performances.
Oyewo was particularly celebrated for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic play The Gods Are Not to Blame by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi. The role cemented his status as one of Africa’s finest theatre actors and earned him recognition across the continent.
His contributions to the growth of Yoruba theatre and Nollywood spanned several decades, inspiring countless actors and theatre practitioners.
