principal says bandit not asking for money, weapons, sharia

Mrs. Folake Alamu, held captive for 24 days alongside pupils and teachers in Oriire, urges Nigerians to stop spreading what she described as false reports about the kidnappers’ demands.

A new video allegedly showing the abducted Principal of Community Grammar School, Esiele, Mrs. Folake Alamu, has surfaced online, 24 days after she and several pupils and teachers were kidnapped from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

In the viral clip, Alamu was seen allegedly appealing to Nigerians to stop circulating what she described as false information about the demands of their captors.

Speaking with her hands clasped in prayer, the principal allegedly stated that neither she nor the other captives had been forced to practise Islam since their abduction. She also claimed that reports suggesting the kidnappers were demanding the implementation of Sharia law, ransom payments, weapons, or other conditions were untrue.

According to Alamu, the abductors’ only demand is allegedly the release of some of their members currently in government custody.

They are not asking for sharia law, money or weapons. All they want is the release of some people

We have not been forced to worship in any Islamic way. They are not asking for Sharia law, they are not asking for money. The single thing they are asking for is the release of some of their people,” she said in the video.

The principal further appealed to members of the public not to politicise their situation, warning that misinformation could allegedly complicate efforts aimed at securing their freedom.

She urged Nigerians to help circulate the video and ensure that what she described as the true position of the kidnappers’ demands reaches the public.

The authenticity of the video and the claims contained in it have not been independently verified by authorities as of the time of filing this report.

Alamu was among teachers and pupils abducted during attacks on three schools in Yawota, Esiele and Alawusa communities on May 15, 2026. Efforts by security agencies to secure the release of the victims are still ongoing.
