The African Action Congress (AAC) has announced the resignation of human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, as the party’s National Chairman.

The party disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday shortly after Sowore emerged as the AAC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections during the party’s primaries in Abuja.

According to the statement, Samuel Ajeigbe has been appointed as the new National Chairman of the party.

“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement noted after confirming Sowore’s resignation from the position.

The development marks a significant leadership transition within the AAC as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Sowore’s resignation came hours after he secured the party’s presidential ticket through what party leaders described as a unanimous endorsement by delegates during the primaries held in the Federal Capital Territory. He was later presented with the party’s flag amid cheers from supporters and delegates from across the country.

Speaking after accepting the nomination, Sowore said the AAC was founded to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance. He commended party members for remaining steadfast despite political and economic challenges facing the country.

The activist also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing the party of incompetence and attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.

During his address, Sowore dismissed claims that more than 10 million members participated in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential primary.

“There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members. I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members,” Sowore said.
