Yoane Wissa’s equaliser earns DR Congo their first-ever World Cup point as Portugal stumble in opening Group K clash.

Portugal’s World Cup campaign began on a disappointing note on Wednesday as the Democratic Republic of Congo secured a historic 1-1 draw in their Group K opener.

Joao Neves gave Portugal an early lead with a sixth-minute header, but DR Congo responded before halftime through Yoane Wissa, whose powerful header secured his country’s first-ever World Cup goal and point.

All eyes were on 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, making his record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance, but the veteran forward struggled to influence the game and missed two late opportunities to restore Portugal’s lead.

The African side, appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, matched Portugal throughout the contest and nearly snatched victory when veteran striker Cedric Bakambu struck the post.

Portugal also had a goal ruled out for offside, but despite dominating possession, they were unable to find a winner as DR Congo celebrated a memorable result against one of the tournament favourites.
