Singer praises Osun voters for defending their votes, promises sports projects and Davido concert after stadium completion.
Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the re-election of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, as a victory for the people, saying his performance should serve as an example to other governors and public officials.
Davido spoke at a press conference in Osun on Tuesday, two days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke winner of the August 16 governorship election.
The singer congratulated his uncle on securing a second term and commended Osun voters for what he described as their determination to protect their votes from the polling units through the various collation centres.
Davido said Adeleke’s victory demonstrated that governors who serve their people well could earn their support during elections.
He said his uncle should serve as an example to other public officials, adding that the people would reciprocate good governance regardless of political opposition.
Davido, who is chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, also announced plans to support sports development in the state, including the establishment of a recreational centre featuring football, swimming, basketball, athletics and other sporting facilities.
He disclosed that he was also planning a concert in Osun after the completion of the state stadium project, expected around the governor’s inauguration.
Davido said he deliberately delayed some of his planned projects during the election period to avoid political controversy over his role as chairman of the sports trust fund.
The singer had played a prominent role in Adeleke’s campaign as chairman of the Imole Youth Mobilisation Campaign Council, participating in rallies and grassroots mobilisation activities.
Adeleke of the Accord Party polled 511,067 votes to defeat APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes, while Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 17,180 votes.
The governor won 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11.
Adeleke’s re-election secured him another four-year term after he first won the governorship in 2022.
