Customs Intercepts Undeclared Foreign Currency From Passenger Arriving From New Delhi

The Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into Adam Musa Adam, who was arrested with $265,000 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.

Adam, a Nigerian passport holder arriving from New Delhi aboard Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET941, was intercepted on September 26, 2026, during routine screening by officers of the Nigeria Customs Service.

His luggage was subjected to secondary examination using Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology, leading to the discovery of the undeclared cash concealed among his personal belongings.

While handing over the suspect and the money to the EFCC, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar Adamu, said the movement of foreign currency above the approved threshold without declaration contravenes relevant provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

Adamu said the command had intercepted undeclared foreign currency and other negotiable instruments worth more than ₦2.5 billion from January to date.

Receiving the suspect and exhibits, the Acting Kano Zonal Director of the EFCC, ACE1 Friday S. Ebelo, said the handover demonstrated inter-agency collaboration in tackling illicit financial flows.

Ebelo said the EFCC would investigate the case and, where appropriate, prosecute it in accordance with its mandate.

He also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the officers involved in the interception for their cooperation and vigilance.
