Airport authority says FM-200 fire suppression system triggered the smoke, as investigations continue into the cause of the activation.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that no fire outbreak occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, despite an emergency response that was activated on Sunday.
In a fresh statement, FAAN said preliminary investigations revealed that the smoke seen inside the terminal was caused by the discharge of the facility’s FM-200 fire suppression system and not by a fire incident.

“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the authority stated.
FAAN explained that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was immediately deployed after the incident was reported, while emergency protocols were activated to safeguard passengers, staff and airport facilities.
The authority confirmed that normal operations have fully resumed at the terminal, with passenger processing and flight activities continuing without disruption.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” FAAN added.
The airport authority also confirmed that no injuries or casualties were recorded during the incident.
FAAN thanked passengers, airlines and other airport users for their patience and cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security across Nigeria’s airports.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport remains Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub, serving thousands of domestic and international passengers daily.
