Communications Ministry directs NCC, NITDA and NDPC to suspend new cross-cutting digital rules pending a harmonised national policy.
The Federal Government has directed agencies under the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to harmonise the regulation of internet platforms and online intermediaries as part of efforts to eliminate overlapping rules within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
The directive, issued by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, instructs the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to suspend the implementation of new cross-cutting digital regulations pending the development of a unified national policy framework.

Tijani said the move became necessary due to the growing overlap in the agencies’ responsibilities, particularly in areas such as internet platforms, artificial intelligence, online safety and data governance.
He explained that the harmonised approach would provide regulatory certainty, encourage investment, strengthen innovation and boost consumer confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy.
The minister also announced the establishment of a Joint Technical Coordination Committee, made up of representatives from the three agencies, to drive consultations with industry stakeholders and develop a comprehensive governance framework.
According to the ministry, the new framework will clearly define the responsibilities of each regulator, reduce compliance burdens for businesses and create a more predictable environment for digital innovation across the country.
