TETFund-backed 1.6MW solar project to boost power supply as institution strengthens campus security.

The Federal Government has commenced the construction of a 1.6MWp/1.5MWh solar mini-grid at the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (FUTI), Ogun State, to provide reliable electricity for teaching, research and innovation.

The TETFund-funded project, expected to occupy about three acres of land, is designed to reduce the institution’s dependence on the national grid while supporting its transition into a university of technology.

According to the institution, TETFund officials have introduced consultants and contractors from Zango Corporate Innovation Limited to the management for the execution of the project.

The Rector and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mukail Akinde, described uninterrupted electricity as essential for technological advancement, noting that modern research and innovation cannot thrive without stable power. He also appreciated President Bola Tinubu, TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative.

Meanwhile, the university has commissioned a new police post to enhance security on campus and within the host community. Representing the Olu of Ilaro, Ayo Dawotola praised the project, while Akinde said the institution remains committed to protecting lives and property.

The university also acknowledged former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for facilitating the project and the current IGP, Tunji Disu, for approving the establishment of a Police Squadron Command within the institution.
