Rights commission urges political actors, religious leaders and media to promote peace and respect citizens’ rights.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised concerns over hate speech, inflammatory statements, threats of violence and voter intimidation ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
Executive Secretary of the commission, Tony Ojukwu, expressed the concerns during a press briefing in Abuja, stressing the need for urgent action to prevent statements capable of heightening tension and undermining peaceful participation in the electoral process.

The NHRC specifically drew attention to divisive statements attributed to some individuals ahead of the Osun election, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could threaten citizens’ rights and peaceful democratic participation.
The commission urged political actors, religious leaders, supporters and the media to exercise restraint, avoid provocative statements and promote messages of peace, tolerance and democratic participation.
It also called on relevant authorities to take appropriate measures against threats and actions capable of intimidating voters or inciting violence.
The NHRC further urged all stakeholders to respect the rights of citizens and contribute to a peaceful electoral environment as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
