Former VP Raises Alarm Over Use of Hazardous Chemicals on Fruits
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that a laboratory test found his wife Dolapo’s freshly squeezed orange juice unfit for human consumption, raising concerns over the use of dangerous chemicals on fruits in Nigeria.
Osinbajo made the disclosure at the Gardeners’ Seminar in Lagos on August 28, saying his wife had developed unexplained headaches despite regularly drinking fresh orange juice instead of carbonated drinks.
He said the family eventually sent the juice for laboratory testing, with the results indicating that it was unsafe for consumption.
Osinbajo linked the incident to the wider use of hazardous substances by some farmers and fruit sellers to hasten ripening, preserve produce or improve its appearance.
He cited studies indicating that some fruit and vegetable sellers admitted using chemicals including calcium carbide, gamma-lin-20, Sniper and phosphite, which he described as toxic.
The former Vice President said the situation had become widespread and called for stronger regulation, enforcement and public awareness.
He warned that the appearance of fresh produce or the natural status of a drink does not necessarily guarantee its safety.
Osinbajo urged consumers to remain vigilant, question sellers about how produce is handled and report suspected harmful practices, while calling for safer alternatives and greater education for farmers and traders.
