Governor describes victims’ release as a “big relief” as Presidency confirms eight kidnappers arrested during security operation.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed joy over the release of the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, describing their rescue after 57 days in captivity as a huge relief for the state.

Speaking on Friday, Governor Makinde thanked President Bola Tinubu, the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies for their relentless efforts in securing the victims’ freedom.

“It’s such a big relief for all of us and for those that have been waiting for the past 57 days,” the governor said, adding that he was overwhelmed with joy over the successful operation.

The Presidency, through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that all the abducted pupils and teachers were rescued during a coordinated security operation.

According to Onanuga, eight members of the kidnapping gang were arrested and are currently in the custody of the DSS, while several others were neutralised during the operation. He added that no concession was made to the kidnappers, including their demand for the release of a detained gang leader facing prosecution.

A video released after the rescue showed one of the rescued teachers thanking President Tinubu and the security agencies for ensuring their safe return, describing the operation as a lifesaving intervention.
