Five bereaved families to receive ₦10m each in honour of security personnel and teachers who died during the operation that freed abducted pupils after 56 days in captivity.
The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of five Nigerians who lost their lives during the rescue operation of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The resolution, moved by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was unanimously adopted during Wednesday’s plenary, with each of the five bereaved families set to receive ₦10 million.
Those honoured include three security personnel—Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force—as well as two teachers, Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun, who died while in captivity.
The Senate said the donation was in recognition of their sacrifice during the operation that secured the release of the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity.
Senate President Akpabio also directed the leadership of the Senate to present the cheques to the families of the deceased.
