Electoral commission says voter register has surpassed 93 million and will rise after nationwide CVR is finalised.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has projected that Nigeria’s registered voter population will exceed 100 million ahead of the 2027 general elections.

National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a joint implementation meeting of the commission’s voter education and gender and inclusivity departments.

Haruna said the current voter register contains more than 93 million registered voters and is expected to cross the 100 million mark after the recently concluded nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise is finalised.

He said the projected increase would further strengthen Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest electoral democracy.

Haruna said INEC was developing a communication and inclusivity roadmap to ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair, credible, peaceful and inclusive.

With 151 days to the first phase of the elections, he urged the commission’s information officers to provide timely and accurate information capable of mobilising eligible Nigerians to participate in the polls.

He also stressed the need for INEC officials to understand the Constitution, electoral laws and relevant legislation, including the Freedom of Information and Data Protection Acts.

Haruna said the commission would draw lessons from recent off-cycle elections, including the just-concluded Osun governorship poll, to deliver what he described as the freest and most credible general elections in Nigeria’s history.

INEC Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, said the commission remained committed to conducting credible and inclusive elections under its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.
