… Oyo governor says he would overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture if elected president in 2027

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s security challenges, arguing that governors are unfairly held responsible for security in their states despite lacking constitutional control over security agencies.

Makinde said the situation places a heavy burden on state governors, who are regarded as Chief Security Officers but do not have the authority to direct the operations of security agencies.

According to him, no leader should be saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property without having the power to command the institutions responsible for carrying out that duty.

The governor also stated that he would pursue far-reaching reforms of Nigeria’s security architecture if elected president in 2027.

“Innocent citizens and schoolchildren are in captivity. As governor, I carry the burden of Chief Security Officer without the constitutional authority to command security agencies,” Makinde said.

He stressed the need for structural changes that would enable state leaders to respond more effectively to security threats and better protect residents.
